Professional Antifreeze Fire Suppression System Inspection in Ann Arbor and Southeast MI

An antifreeze system is a specialized system found in areas where piping is subject to freezing temperatures. This system is used to protect smaller areas such as truck docks, drive through canopies, and small attics. The antifreeze system is typically tied into existing wet system piping downstream of the main water supply. The system maintains a constant pressure of antifreeze mixed with water throughout the piping past the water supply point. With sprinkler head activation, the antifreeze- water mix is dispersed from the activated sprinkler head allowing water to enter the piping and low through the open sprinkler head(s).

Antifreeze Fire Systems Solutions Are Highly Regulated by the NFPA

Wet sprinkler systems that rely on antifreeze have long served as a viable option for fire protection systems that are exposed to cold, and sub-zero weather. However, because of the potential hazards of using antifreeze, the National Fire Protection Association has been phasing it out, with a deadline in 2022. To date, one product has been introduced to the market that meets the latest standard for antifreeze systems and offers a new possibility to keep wet sprinkler systems functional in sub-zero climates. The product meets the standards as set by NFPA 13 and 25.

From the 2019 edition of NFPA 13: 3.3.160 Premixed Antifreeze Solution. A mixture of an antifreeze material with water that is prepared, and factory mixed by the manufacturer with a quality control procedure in place that ensures that the antifreeze solution remains homogeneous and that the concentration is as specified.

From the 2017 edition of NFPA 25: 5.3.3.4.2 Newly introduced solutions shall be factory premixed antifreeze solutions (chemically pure or United States Pharmacopeia 96.5 percent).
